Revamp or redo: how to decide what your home needs

Most homes that feel tired do not need demolition. They need the walls to breathe, one piece to carry colour, the art hung properly and the lighting moved. This guide is the checklist we use at a first visit to decide whether a room is a revamp or a redo.

Five things to take away

  1. If the layout works and the services are sound, revamp.
  2. If the kitchen, bathrooms or wiring must change, redo those rooms and revamp the rest.
  3. A revamp is weeks on site; a redo is months.
  4. Restored furniture is the cheapest way to raise the quality of a room.
  5. Decide room by room, not for the whole home at once.

The five questions

Does the layout work for how you live now? Are the floors sound and do you like them? Are the kitchen and bathrooms functional? Is the wiring adequate for today's load and lighting? Is there damp? Four yes answers and the room is a revamp. A no on the kitchen, the bathrooms or the wiring means a redo for that room.

What a revamp changes

Wall finish, usually to lime wash. One or two pieces of furniture restored or repainted in a single colour. A carved door, panel or frame introduced as the room's centre. Lighting positions and fittings. Curtains, rugs, plants, art rehung in a row. The room keeps its floor, its services and its shape and changes its character.

What a redo changes

Everything behind the finish: floors, plumbing, wiring, false ceilings, kitchen carcasses, bathroom tiling and waterproofing. A redo is the right call when those are failing, and the wrong call when they are fine and only the surface is dated.

Time on site

A revamp of one room takes four to eight weeks. A redo of a kitchen or bathroom takes six to twelve weeks each. A full apartment redo runs three to five months. Families usually stay in the home through a revamp and move out for a full redo.

Cost, in proportion

Published 2026 turnkey ranges for Mumbai and Delhi sit between roughly ₹900 and ₹4,000 per square foot, driven by kitchens, bathrooms, ceilings and made-to-order furniture. A revamp avoids most of those lines, so the same room costs a fraction of its turnkey equivalent. The figures are in our cost guide.

Lime wash, and why it suits Indian homes

Lime wash is a mineral finish that breathes, which matters in humid cities and in old buildings that hold moisture. It gives a soft, chalky surface that takes carved wood and brass well, it is easy to refresh, and it does not peel the way layered paint systems do when walls are damp. We seal it where hands touch and leave it matt everywhere else.

The one-colour rule

A revamp fails when it adds colour everywhere. It works when the walls go quiet and one piece, a door, a cabinet, a headboard, takes a strong, chipped colour. The eye needs one place to rest.

Mixing the two

Most homes are both. Redo the kitchen and the bathrooms because the services demand it; revamp the living room, dining room and bedrooms because the bones are fine. Sequence the redo rooms first so the dust is over before the lime wash goes on.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a revamp and a renovation?

A revamp keeps the structure, floors and services and changes finishes, furniture, lighting and decor. A renovation or redo replaces what is behind the finish as well.

Can I revamp a rented flat?

Yes, with reversible changes: paint or lime wash the landlord agrees to, freestanding furniture, lamps instead of rewiring, rugs over the floor.

How long does a room revamp take?

Four to eight weeks on site, after two to three weeks of design.

Is lime wash washable?

Lime wash is a matt mineral finish that marks more easily than acrylic paint. We seal it in kitchens, children's rooms and anywhere hands touch, and it refreshes in an afternoon.

Should I redo the kitchen if it works?

No. A working kitchen with dated doors is a revamp: repaint or replace the shutters, change the hardware and lighting, keep the carcasses and the plumbing.
